Friends Disaster Service-Texas Area has partnered with CORE Alliance’s Homes for Haiti project that is now building in Houston! We have opened a League City Warehouse to begin the construction of modular housing for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. The warehouse is located at 100 Gulf Freeway North, inside the storefront formerly used by Academy Sports.

No skills or tools are needed. Volunteers must be 12 years of age or older parent supervision required for volunteers under 18 years old and sign a liability waiver. Open volunteer times are Wednesday nights 5-8pm, Fridays Noon-8pm, and Saturdays 8am-5pm. Large groups 10 or more people can be scheduled for other times in the warehouse.

Your tax-deductible contribution to Friends Disaster Service will help cover the cost of producing these homes for Haiti. It costs about $600 per house, Donations of funds, materials, tools and transportation are needed. If your church or organization sponsors a home we will mark the door with your name.

Dear Friend,

I've spoken to Friend Tom Hoke today who organizes and operates Friends Disaster Service with his wife Cathy. Tom gave me details about how Friends can help build walls, floors and roofs (see photographs) of temporary shelters in Texas, which will be shipped to Haiti, then assembled for use by Haiti earthquake victims.

Overview

Where is League City, Texas?

A group of 5 Churches in League City Texas, including the Lighthouse Fellowship (Friends) has formed a relief group called the C.O.R.E. Alliance. Tom and Cathy and C.O.R.E. plan to build 10,000 of these shelters (with Friends' help) over the next six months with C.O.R.E. and Shelter Haiti. Tom plans to go to Haiti to then help assemble the components . C.O.R.E. as part of the Shelter Haiti Project is planning to hire a ship to deliver the pre-made components to Haiti.

Temporary Shelters

Construction materials and shipping for each shelter will cost $500 - $600 and the materials are mostly wood and treated wood. The dimensions of the finished shelters are 8 x 12 feet, and house two sets of bunk beds.

Monetary Donations

Friends are welcome to send monetary donations to help buy materials for more shelters. Please see the contact information. Checks should be made to Friends Disaster Service. Tom Hoke has agreed to send a final report showing total donations and total costs at the end of the project. This is now expected to be a six month project.

Time and Talent Donations

Where is League City, Texas?

Tom welcomes groups of up to 20 volunteers with no experience needed. Friends can go to League City, TX over the next 6 months to help build the component walls, floors and roofs within an enclosed construction space. There will be painting as well as assembly work needed and no tools of any sort are needed to be brought by volunteers. Please contact Tom to coordinate a time when your group can make its sweat contribution. Volunteers will be housed at no cost. C.O.R.E. also accepts tool donations.

Homes for Haiti

...Shelter Haiti is a large-scale aid initiative created by Christians Organized for Relief Efforts (C.O.R.E. Alliance), based in Houston, and Christ in Action, based in Manassas, VA. The project began in Houston, where volunteers pledged to build 1,000 homes. The local arm of the effort is being led by Ed Jackson, a Myrtle Beach real estate developer. The majority of the construction will take place in a warehouse location in Myrtle Beach generously provided by The Sun News....
